I did like the area and I loved the weather in CA. However, I hated the neighborhoods! They had expensive and cheap there wasn't much of an in between (at least not what I was used to). You would drive straight from a great neighborhood to a poor neighborhood in just one block. It could be very scary if you didn't know the area. I completely understand why you would miss the midwest, I actually ended up having to move back. We didn't have any kids at the time and my husband could not find a job and would not move out until he did. I got to a point I could not take it anymore by myself and ended up coming back to MO. I probably wouldn't have moved back if my husband could have made it out there.
