Crafty Momma Alert!! Crib Rail Covers and Pillow

The baby has been teething like a MAD woman. She's also gone through a frustrating sleep hiccup. To make a long story short she's been gnawing into her crib that was supposed to last through all of our kids. It still can, but my husband will have to sand it down and repaint it. Aside from the cosmetic damage, I don't want G swallowing paint and wood! Needless to say, I've been on the prowl for something to cover her rails.
I saw the gummy things you can stick on, but thought those looked pretty cheap. I saw the clip on plastic things but didn't think they would fit her convertible crib style. Then I found the cloth rail covers that looked perfect! There's only one kind sold in stores and 2 other kinds I could find online. Is there really not that big of a market for crib rail covers?
I guess not because the cost certainly doesn't reflect a competitive price point. $22+ for the front rail cover and $37+ for a pair of side rail covers! No thank you, ma'am.

Now, I'm not much of a seamstress...that's my mom's gig (no, really, she's amazing). It's something she never really passed on to me (mostly my fault). I do, however, have her "old" machine. Since getting it last summer I have hemmed one pair of PJ pants, and it was a miserable job. I have had the supplies to make G's baby pillow in her closet for months, but never dug out the sewing machine to actually complete the craft.

A set of $59 crib rail covers was enough to pull the crafty momma right out of me.

Look what I made!!! Custom crib rail covers!

1.5 yards of quilted fabric

sewn long piece, I doubled part over
ribbon ties
Ta-Da!!
Don't look too close because the stitches aren't perfect and there are several errors, but I am SO proud of myself. They're not professional, but they will get the job done and I think they are super cute! The supplies cost less than $10 (thanks to a 50% off coupon), so I saved us FORTY DOLLARS!!

And here's her baby pillow:
Cute fabric, huh?

I'm really proud of my stitches, I didn't pin a single thing and kept them straight!

Final Product (I made two, so I can rotate as needed)

  2. They look great! I'm impressed! I learned to use a sewing machine in home ec in 8th grade, but definitely don't remember how. My mom doesn't sew (you're lucky!) and I don't really have anyone to teach me, but once we have the money to afford a decent sewing machine, I want to get one and take lessons!

  3. Thsoe look great. I always meant to make some for C, but never did. Her crib is all chewed and scratched up. I like the pillow too, but she throws everything I put in her crib out before she will lay down. Cracks me up.
